Myself and my team, Grimnir Games, were part of the Dare to be Digital 2010 competition. We developed a prototype on PSP hardware entitled Death Inc. This 2.5D side scrolling platform game involves the player persuing the role of a newly recruited reaper in the afterlifes reaping firm, Death Incorporated, who is sent back in time to reap the souls of historic figures. The prototype focussed on the battle of Troy, in which the player progressed from the Greek armada, to the battlefield of Troy. We were aiming for a nostalgic, humourous and challanging game when designing and developing the prototype. One of our core mechanics, the real to shadow world phasing mechanic, allowed the player to switch between the real world and the shadow world at the hit of a shoulder button. However, the player could only use platforms and terrain from the real world when in the real world and clouds in the shadow world. This added a challenging element to the game. We also included rival enemy reapers that would roam the shadow world as well as quick-time events to gain 'heroic souls. Our group consisted of two artists and three programmers. My role within the group was Lead Artist as well as doing all character art and animations within the game. We built our own engine for the PSP and were able to produce a prototype that ran on actual PSP hardware. The game was showcased at the Protoplay 2010 event in Ediburgh and the reception for the game was on the whole positive. Links to various websites and blogs for the game can be seen below along with screenshots and a video demonstrating the game.
